Inflammatory foods: why your plate keeps the fire going

A belly that swells after meals. Tiredness that stays, even after a decent night. Sugar cravings late in the afternoon. You eat better than you used to, and still something is off. You are not alone, and it has nothing to do with willpower.

I have coached hundreds of people over the years. Behind these vague symptoms I nearly always find the same thread: low-grade inflammation, the silent kind. It does not hurt. It wears you out, it upsets digestion, and it scrambles your hunger and your sleep.

Inflammation is not the enemy

Cut your finger and the skin turns red and swells. The body walls off the area and repairs it. That inflammation is useful, and it switches itself off.

Trouble starts when the signal never switches off. No clear pain, no diagnosis. Just a pile of small signs you end up calling normal. Once it settles in, inflammation feeds itself. Your body grows less sensitive to insulin, blood sugar swings, and hunger stops being a signal you can trust.

What goes on your plate either feeds that loop or breaks it.

The balanced plate myth

“Eat a bit of everything, in moderation.” It is the most repeated nutrition advice of the last forty years. Millions of people follow it in good faith. Plenty of them still feel bloated and tired.

That model was not built around what the body needs. The first modern food pyramid put grains at the base, with six to eleven servings a day of bread, pasta and crackers. It reflected the interests of farming and industry as much as the science of the time. And it puts whole foods on the same level as industrial products that have nothing in common with them.

Your body does not read the percentages on the label. It reads the biological message each food sends it.

What keeps the fire fed

Ultra-processed foods act directly on inflammation. Emulsifiers, some sweeteners and preservatives thin out the microbiome and make the gut lining more permeable. Poorly digested fragments get through where they should not, and the immune system reacts as if it were facing an invader.

Industrial seed oils are one of the biggest levers. High in omega-6, usually refined and heated over and over, they produce oxidized compounds that feed inflammation. They hide in fried food, sauces and almost every ready meal.

Alcohol raises inflammation, dehydrates you, disrupts sleep and brings the cravings back the next day.

Those are only three groups. The Totem Reset deals with others, including some you would never suspect because you were told they were healthy.

This is not a willpower problem

If you give in despite your best intentions, it is no accident. The food industry has a name for the mix of sugar, salt and fat that makes you want the next bite: the bliss point. It does not exist in nature. It was engineered in a lab.

The industry has also learned to speak the language of health. No added sugar, high in fiber, source of omega-3, plant-based, gluten-free. These claims reassure you. They say nothing about how processed the product really is. A yogurt sweetened with agave syrup gets sold as probiotic, and a bar with six different sugars gets sold as a sports snack.

You are not weak. You are exposed.

The fiber trap

This is what surprises my clients most. Fiber has been sold as a cure-all. In a healthy gut, that holds. In a sensitized gut, some kinds of fiber often make bloating worse instead of easing it.

So what you eat to do the right thing can be part of the problem. The food is not bad. The timing is wrong, and so is the state of your gut. The guide shows you how to find your way through it.

Take away before you add

The Hadza of Tanzania are one of the last hunter-gatherer peoples. No farmed grains, no processed food. Their microbiome is remarkably rich, and chronic metabolic disease is almost absent. The point is not to live like them. The point is to see that your body still runs on the same laws.

You do not force the body to get better. You remove what stops it. And nothing you remove is banned for good. The method exists precisely so you find out what works for you.

The Totem Reset is not a diet. It does not count calories. It gives you the full framework: what comes out, what stays, in what order, and how to watch what changes. The guide is €12, or part of the complete Library of all seven guides for €39.

When I choose what goes on my own plate, I stick to these foods. I am not asking you to do the same.

Your body knows how to heal. Give it the chance.
